FRANKEN
Fürstlich Castell’sches Domänenamt
The Castell family owns 80 hectares of the finest Franconian vineyards. The majority are planted with the Silvaner grape variety. The terroir is characterized by a continental climate and gypsum-Keuper soils, which give the wines their spicy, robust character.
April 6, 1659, was to become an important date for viticulture in Castell, Franconia, and Germany as a whole—the first planting of Silvaner!
The seven VDP-classified single-vineyard sites (five of which are monopole vineyards) are in some cases over 750 years old and are located on the slopes of the Steigerwald. The forest plays a vital role in viticulture. In summer, it provides coolness; in winter, it offers protection. This results in mineral-driven white wines and structured red wines.
